Religion
 (Blest Are We) by Silver Burdett Ginn:  A Scott Foresman Imprint
  • Read, reflect upon, and apply Scripture to life. 
  • Basic understanding of the beginning of the Church.
  • Explore the seven sacraments as a way of life.
  • Learn about Christian lifestyles.
  • Understand worship space and Catholic Christian symbols.
  • Attend weekly school mass.  
Math (Houghton Mifflin - Math Expressions)   
  • Use the problem solving process. 
  • Learn about math with others (cooperate, collect, record).
  • Use math equipment correctly and carefully.
  • Read and write Roman numerals.
  • Use the problem-solving process.
  • Use charts, graphs, tables, manipulatives, and other resources to solve problems.
  • Use and make models and manipulatives to explain thinking.
  • Mastery of multiplication and division facts up to 12 by end of third grade. 
  • Introduction to geometry.
Language Arts (Macmillan-McGraw Hill)
  • Selections are whole pieces of literature and excerpts from stories.
  • Use story maps and graphic organizers.
  • Excellent literature is read to students 
  • Learn about sentence structure, sentence parts, nouns, pronouns, adjectives, verbs, adverbs and mechanics.
  • Write opening and closing sentences.
  • Discover writing with a purpose.
  • Use a variety of writing forms to write descriptive sentences.  
  • Write quality sentences using correct punctuation and capitalization.
Spelling (Macmillan-Macgraw-Hill)
  • Study sight words, phonetic words, and high-use writing words from a weekly list.
  • Pre-test on Monday, missed words are practiced each night
  • Post- test on Friday or the last day of the week. 
  • Every sixth lesson is a review lesson.
  • Spelling is emphasized in all assignments throughout the curriculum
Social Studies   (Houghton Mifflin)
  • Discover communities.
  • Learn about natural resources and geography.
  • Explore our local, county and national governments. 
  • Visit the Carver County Historical Museum to learn about the history of Carver County.
  • Waconia Project:  Each child picks a business in Waconia to learn more about.  Interview the business, write a report, take pictures or draw a picture of the business, make a model of the business, and present the project to the class.

Science  (McGraw-Hill)

  • Examine plants and animals.
  • Explore where plants and animals live.
  • Discover our Earth.
  • Learn about cycles on earth and space.
  • Investigate forces and motion.
  • Introduction into matter and energy.

Handwriting (Zaner-Bloser) (Universal publishing)

  • Refine printing skills.
  • Cursive writing is taught.
  • Daily assignments are written with best handwriting.
  • Writing about our Catholic Faith.
Art
  • Use of a variety of mediums and activities.
  • Learn about famous artists.

Other
Students attend weekly classes in Music, Physical Education, Technology, Spanish and Media Center. 


Homework Expectations

Third graders will be expected to complete approximately 30 - 40 minutes of daily homework.
